five plots for one car (2026–ongoing)
artistic research, ghana

it began in the 1990s, when my mother accepted five plots of land in accra as payment for a truck. over the following decades, she built three family houses, moving between germany and ghana, organising materials and working alongside relatives. shaped by the lives of those involved, the buildings have been extended, damaged, repaired and transformed over time. their walls and surfaces carry traces of labour, care, tensions and shifting responsibilities across distances.

the research follows how these relationships have become inscribed in the structures themselves, exploring ways to translate these marks into photographic and material processes.

ABOUT

gifty amoateng is a Berlin-based transdisciplinary visual artist whose research-based practice combines archival materials, photographic imagery, and material experimentation. Her work explores how migration, belonging, and memory are shaped by social structures, personal relationships, and connections across generations and geographical distances.

Drawing on family archives, official documents, and personal narratives, she examines how experiences are recorded, interpreted, and passed on. Through folding, fragmentation, layering, and spatial interventions, she reworks these sources into tactile and visual forms, questioning how institutional narratives relate to lived realities and shape understandings of hybrid identity.
